PHOTOGRAPH, from writer/director Ritesh Batra, tells the story of Rafi (Nawazuddin Siddiqui), who works the streets of Mumbai as a photographer, creating snapshots for tourists.
His Polaroids earn him a wage so he can send money home to his family living in a rural village.
One day, he spots a woman whose photograph he would like to take – but she disappears before he can present her with the portrait he has created.
When his grandmother comes to visit, he fears a dressing down (and perhaps worse) for his single status – so using the photograph he has taken, he sets up a fantasy that she is his girlfriend – and when he finds her again, he persuades Miloni (Sanya Malhotra) to pretend to be his fiancée.
She comes from a very different background to him, making the match more than unlikely.
But in the hustle of India’s capital, two unlikely lovebirds can find common ground. This gentle romcom has two solid leads but best of all it is shot on location, and Mumbai makes for a wonderful background for the story to unfold against.
• WE are great admirers of everything to do with the doc production and distribution team that is Dogwoof: they don’t miss a trick, and this is partly to do with the grand scope of topics they cover.
From globally relevant political pieces to mini-dramas that seem to enlighten us about the human condition, they have a wide reach.
This week, the excellent documentary by Richard Miron, For The Birds, is available to download online. It tells the story of Kathy, who shares her home with 200 ducks, chickens, geese and turkeys.
Animal rights groups aren’t best pleased with the conditions they live in, while her husband Gary also feels he is relegated to a poor second place when it comes to affections.
Filmed over a period of five years, we are given a unique insight and consideration into one person’s relationship with other creatures, and the value of such intense emotional links with animals who we rely on and in turn rely on us.
