Desperate for decent homes

15 October, 2020

‘Many people, including families, are facing eviction when the current rent moratorium ends’

• WE do indeed face a desperate housing situation, where so many are in need of decent housing.

The government has professed its concern about the plight of rough sleepers and shortage of housing for young people. Many people, including families, are facing eviction when the current rent moratorium ends this month.

Providing short-term cash to assist rough sleepers and introducing planning changes to make property development easier will do little to provide the kind of genuinely affordable housing which is so desperately needed to provide a long-term solution to the dire housing situation.

The government’s real priorities are made clear by the knighthood given to Tony Gallagher – a multi-millionaire property developer who has given the Tories many thousands of pounds – for “services to land development and the property business” (Guardian, October 10).
