ONE of the capital’s busiest boxing clubs was celebrating at the weekend after crowning their first champion of 2020.

Weighing in at over 91kg, Islington ABC’s Odera Okwuosa overcame two tough opponents in two days at the Dagenham Roundhouse in east London to land the much-coveted Super Heavyweight London Intermediate title.

On Friday Okwuosa defeated Uthman Nawaz from East London Boxing Academy, securing a unanimous victory.

In Saturday’s final Okwuosa returned to the ring against All Stars ABC’s Brian Muwenge, where he recovered from “a slow start” to outscore his counterpart over three three-minute rounds to secure another win.

“Odera is a good prospect and could be one to watch out for next season,” said Islington’s club manager Reggie Hagland.

Islington ABC entered two other boxers into the London Intermediate Championships.

Boxing at Under-75kg, Charlie Roche lost via a 3-2 split decision in the quarter-finals against Repton ABC’s Liam Forrest, while, clubmate Senay Kahsay, boxing at Under-69kg, lost against Timon Asiama-Southgate, from Cuban BA.
