• READING the article about lead thieves in Milner Square brought to mind the vexed question of scaffolding in Islington, (Thieves strip lead from roofs in raid on listed homes in Angel, May 17).

Was there scaffolding on the building when there didn’t need to be? Of course, the use of scaffolding is wholly unavoidable in some cases. During the time the scaffolding is in place the property is at increased risk of burglary.

In recognition of this, the scaffolding should be in place for the minimum period. Reasonably, this would be only the time between the commencement of work and its completion.

The Tribune reports contractor JTC recommending removing anything that would give thieves easy access to the roof. The properties are managed by Partners, which is responsible for the scaffolding.

If it is the case that the scaffolding was erected in advance of the commencement of work and/or left in situ after the completion of work for any period of time Partners might be considered to have needlessly put the building at risk.

If this were the case, it might even call into question insurance cover. If that were to be voided, who would pay to put matters right?
